What Causes Blessings to Stay and What Causes Them to Go?

Isn’t it strange that an emotionally stable person never forgets a kindness granted to him from his fellow human being, but we find that he doesn’t even bear the slightest gratitude for the All-Generous Lord of Existence? We see some people who act in a lazy way even in a simple bow during their prayer, and this has no value with the Lord. At the same time he spends twice that energy doing useless and frivolous things which won’t bring him any benefit in this world or the next.

The nature of the one who is both generous and wise is that he won’t focus on the kindness he shows to others. But Almighty God, who is the Most Generous of the Generous and the Wisest of the Wise, reminds His servants of His blessings in various areas as a means for them to return to Him. The souls are created to love the one who gives them blessings and to hate the one who does harm to them. So what if that blessing were the very gift of existence itself and all the blessings that come from it, blessings which can never be counted?

Almighty God often reminds His servants about the blessings in the world of nature. For example, {Don’t you see that God has subjected for you whatsoever is in the heavens and the earth, and has completed His blessings on you, apparent and hidden.}. Other times He reminds them of the origins of their existence and how they were created from nothing, saying, {Verily We have created the human being from a sperm-drop in order to test him, thus We made him seeing and hearing}. Other times He reminds them of spiritual blessings in order to open new horizons for them to move towards completion, saying, {And whoever obeys God and the Prophet, they will be in the company of those on whom God has bestowed His blessings, of the Prophets, the pious, the martyrs, and the righteous}.

Amongst the greatest blessings in the world is the blessing of belonging to the best of religions, and possessing the best methods of knowing Islam. How miserable some people will be on the Day of Judgment when they are raised up and shocked by this fact: {And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers}. As much as the proof and knowledge have been completed, the servant will likely face a tough judgment and quick consequences. The one who falls into the circle of divine favors is not like the one who has the misfortune of living in the society of misguidance!

Almighty God, as is mentioned in the Qur’an, does not change the blessings upon a people until they change their own condition. The Divine rule is to not take away a blessing that has been given unless the servant does something that negates that blessing. The one who possesses relative guidance, then turns to something forbidden, doesn’t find the sweetness of faith in his heart, but rather he finds the sweetness of falsehood in his desire-ridden soul. If the servant arrives at this stage, he will fall into a bottomless pit, pushed on one hand by the Devil, and on the other by his own corrupt soul.

Not only are blessings extended by giving thanks, but God also promises in His Holy Book to add even more. It should be known that true gratitude is the transformation of a blessing into a means to please God and to serve His creatures. Being grateful for wealth, for example, doesn’t mean giving thanks with mere words while neglecting to give charity. In reality, God creates wealth with a responsibility to share it with the one who asks and with the poor. If people acted with this kind of practical gratitude over their wealth, would any pocket of poverty remain in this Nation?

Many people only focus on the negative side of life and only see what they don’t have. They don’t see all the great things they have, even if they are in abundance! These people combine two traits in their souls: inner confusion and annoyance with God’s will and action. The right thing is to always look at the people who are the most deprived, rather than to strain ones eyes in longing for the things that God has given as enjoyment to others, the splendor of this world, by which they are tested.

Some people always hold out hope for the ideal condition, convinced that it is the natural one. In reality if someone has all of life’s basics he should consider himself very blessed, and should try and convince himself to work for the Hereafter. The Prophet (S) said, “The one who wakes up in the morning, goes to bed at night, and has three blessings has all the blessings in the world: the one who awakes and goes to sleep with bodily health, has safety amongst his people, and has his daily food. If he has a fourth blessing, he has all the blessings in this world and in the Hereafter, and that is Faith.” Are we anything like what our beloved Prophet (S) described?!
